01. What is "custom" software?
Software that is custom tailored to your unique requirements and specific needs. Unlike off-the-shelf software, we can build whatever your heart desires, as long as it's technically possible.
02. What are some of the advantages of custom software?
Flexibility and control. Off-the-shelf software have limitations and often businesses are forced to change their workflow to accommodate for the way that certain software was designed to work, which is often very generic and limiting. You tell us exactly how you want the software to function and you have full control over the workflow. This makes the user experience inherently intuitive and requires little to no training for your staff.
03. Is custom software more expensive than off-the-shelf software?
It certainly can be. But that all depends on how well it was initially designed and how often your business requirements change. But startups and industries that are constantly evolving are the ones who need custom software the most. Once a business is stablized and doesn't require frequent changes to workflow the cost savings will come into effect because YOU own the software so there aren't any licensing fees or forced upgrades. It is possible to customize some off-the-shelf software but the costs are comparible and you don't end up owning anything at the end of the day.
04. What programming languages do you use?
Great question! Our team is proficient in many programming languages but we prefer to specialize in web applications built with Ruby on Rails. This allows us to streamline development, and it makes it easier for our team to jump into other projects when needed because we have created our own developing guidlines to follow.
05. Do you develop mobile apps?
We do. But prefer not to. Mobile app devevlopment is much more expensive, especially when you have to develop for 2 different platforms. Mobile apps can be great but for the industries that we prefer to work in, our clients are better off with web applications that work on any brower on any platform. Windows, Mac, iOS or Android - one app.
06. Why are your hourly development rates so high?
Because it's 2024. All jokes aside, we all know that costs have significantly increased in recent years but we would argue that our rates aren't as high as they may seem. It is important to point out that our rates include a team of at least 3 people and not just a single developer. Project Management and Quality Assurance Testing is baked into each development hour.
07. Why shouldn't I hire in-house developers and build my own team for less cost?
We get this question often. It might be temping to hire a friend, relative or student to tackle your IT needs and that is totally fine, depending on how important IT is to your business. If you require a software platform that your entire organization relies on and is crucial for your business to function, then you need to decide whether or not to become an IT company, which involves managing something that is not your core business. You'll need to hire a PM and QA Testers because developers should never test their own code. Trust us. If something goes wrong, you'll want a team of experienced experts availale to troubleshoot immediately. Also, developers often have a high turnover rate and the process of onboarding a new developer into an existing project can be very time consuming, not to mention the cost of any potential downtime.
